Why iHSPU?

You get to STOP sending your athletes to do seated DB press or floor-facing box HSPU and allow them to train INVERTED SAFELY!

I designed the iHSPU for several reasons:

  • Inclusion - Athletes who don’t RX HSPU workouts feel like they’re not doing the same workout as the “real” athletes. This changes that by getting them upside down quickly and safely, to perform their HSPU during workouts (like the other athletes)

  • Correct Strengthening - DB Press, knees or feet on boxes for “handstand push-ups” and other scaled options do not strengthen the athletes in the correct muscle groups, nor do they actually reach a full handstand position. PROBLEM SOLVED with the iHSPU!

  • Mobility - If an athlete struggles with overhead mobility and handstand push-ups, there may be a common reason why. By limbering the pecs, thoracic and lats in the overhead position an athlete can work toward the full handstand position and remove the opposing forces in the upper torso that prevent them from reaching full extension.

  • Full ROM - Ab mats do not allow the athlete to go to full range of motion, and if you don’t pass through the full ROM then you do not strengthen the full ROM. Simple as that. Utilizing the legs as assistance an athlete can train their HSPU to full ROM (and more). Adding plates for a deficit HSPU even weaker athletes can train to a greater ROM, insuring they are strengthening the muscles all the way to their insertion points.

  • Reaching Heights - Boxes are big and bulky, and athletes come in all different heights. Shorter athletes drag boxes over to the equipment just to reach, but with the back pad of the iHSPU offering a step platform on top, athletes can easily set the step height they need and pop up on the equipment with little disruption to the valuable space in the gym.

  • Multi-Purpose (on the floor) - Abdominal strength with modified sit-ups, glute strength with hip thrusts, lat strength from dumbbell pull-overs, pec strength from full ROM floor press and many other movements, the floor-use option of the iHSPU can serve many functions beyond the handstand push-up. It’s quick to attach the two pieces and sits sturdy on the floor.
